I have always dream of going to Japan at least once in my life.therefore i have research about it through this website.
i am going to use this three criteria to evaluate this website: Authority, Accessibility and Currency.
Authority: I would say that this site is authoritative because it is written by the company Lonely planet who has produce lots of travel guides and documentaries of traveling to different countries.
Accessibility: Access to this website is easy too.all information can be access with just a click.
Currency: I would say this site is well maintained and it has up-to-date information with the latest information updated on July 16 2010.
I would say the most important evaluation criteria is authority Because without authority , i may not get the right information on the country I'm going to and if the website is able to book hotels, i might get cheated off my money and left without a place to stay in that country or book a hotel that is not to my expectations.
i have used Accuracy, Purpose and Coverage as a criteria to evaluate Stomp.com
Accuracy: it think it is accurate in a sense that it provide photographs and video as a evidence for each news.but in another sense, it is not accurate because of the person point of view may not be correct.
Purpose: the main purpose of this website is to connect, engage and interact with Singaporeans in a style and approach that is different from conventional news websites. this is why most of the posts in the site are not news you mainly see in newspaper. I can say that the site has achieve its purpose.
Coverage: the site has quite a good coverage of news and useful links. It has links to NLB, speak good english movement and promote chinese council.
a.What lessons have you learnt from this activity? i learn that for a website to be good , you have to use this three criteria as a basis. it has to have accurate information and good coverage of news or posts for your intended audience.
Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?
if the information in the database is relevant to your research, then i think is useful .although searching on invisible web is accurate , it may not return the relevant search result. An example is ITPRO. if i use it for my research topic , it will only return information on computer animation and flash as ITPRO focus on IT topics.
Will you use the invisible web (databases) for research in your own respective Diplomas? Why?
Yes. because the resource is accurate and trustworthy , it cut down time to check whether the information is accurate or not.
What have you learnt from your wiki experience during this practical?
i have to learn to work with people that i do not know. it is not easy as you do not know the person and what is his/her style of doing things. so i think it needs more effort to work together as compared to working with your friends.
I started to share my research topic and update it on EIR subject wiki at www.eir-rawkz.wetpaint.com.
My research topic is "the trends and developments on animation industry in Japan" which i think is a challenging topic as i need to talk about trends of Japanese animation and the development of Japanese animation. i chose this topic as i like Japanese animation.
after updating my research on the wiki, i find it is good to share what you know to the community.because it shows the effort you have put in your research.
I was impressed with Google search engine because Google has some features which are interesting , an example is the I'm feeling lucky button. it takes you to the first search result that you search for.sometimes it will give you a hilarious result that is not what you wanted. it also have more relevant search results as compared to other search engines.
i like to participate in forums because i get to learn something from other people in the forum. which is sometimes quite useful for research . i do feel anxious when i participate in forums because you do not know who the person you talking to and what is their reaction to my post in the forum
Citation and bibilography must be done so that when some one comments on topics from the forum they will be able to look into further informations. Thus, the link that i include in bibilography will definitely help them in some sense.
Virtual Shopping Spree on Second Life (E-learning Activity)
Comparing shopping with second life and online e-shopping, i find that shopping online is better as online shopping sites has more descriptions of the product compared to just short descriptions and pictures in second life. secondly , you need to navigate around the shopping site/lsland to find stuff you want to buy.i find it more troublesome compared to clicking link in a website.
i have learn to depend on myself through this e- learning experience.
the most challenging experience i have was to find out how to navigate around second life and finding out how to go to different places. As the world in second life is huge, i need to explore the place before going to the place i wanted to go.
